Our Chosen Charity for the Year

It is with a heavy heart that we come together to announce Puffins’ chosen charity for the year. This decision is in honour of a very cherished member of our team, Karen Alford, who left an incredible mark on all of us and our nurseries.

Karen was not just a colleague; she was an integral part of the Puffins family for over 13 years. Karen’s passion for Early Years and her care for the growth of every child in our care was unparalleled. Karen had a unique way of brightening everyone’s day.

In Karen’s honour and with the assistance of Karen’s family, we have chosen Marie Curie as our designated charity for the year. Marie Curie provides expert hospice care, support over the phone and push for better end of life care for all. Marie Curie was brilliant and lovingly supported Karen and her family in her last few days.

Throughout the year, we will organise events and occasions to raise money for Marie Curie, this year being very special! We hope that by coming together in Karen’s memory, we can continue her legacy of being a compassionate, kind and dedicated part of Puffins.

Any support, whether big or small, will undoubtedly make a positive impact for Marie Curie and the lives they impact.

UNIQUE!

At Christmas we asked our staff to put on their Christmas jumpers and raise some more for the charity, UNIQUE!

Across the company we managed to raise an incredible £200.00!!!

Unique aim to be there for families and individuals, offering a listening ear, an understanding, sympathetic presence to support them when they need us most, often at or just after receiving a diagnosis of a rare chromosome disorder or an autosomal dominant single gene disorder.

Thank you to all of our staff and parents who donated to this wonderful cause!

Christmas Jumper Month for UNIQUE!

Each year for the month of December our staff are able to wear a Christmas jumper to work if they wish. All that we ask is that they donate a small amount to our chosen charity. This year the charity we have chosen is one close to the heart of one of our team.

Unique is the charity we are raising money for this month!

They aim to be there for families and individuals, offering a listening ear, an understanding, sympathetic presence to support them when they need us most, often at or just after receiving a diagnosis of a rare chromosome disorder or an autosomal dominant single gene disorder.

With Suzie’s permission I am able to share this. Suzie the deputy manager at Mont Le Grand, has received first hand support from Unique for her family. Suzie wants to share some of their story:

‘’When my granddaughter Penelope, was born eight years ago, the medical staff knew very little about her conditions and offered minimal support to my daughter and she and the rest of my family were left very much in the dark.

However, I discovered Unique purely by chance and they were an absolute revelation. The literature that they provide on so many chromosomal disorders is incredible and so very helpful; but Unique’s staff are simply wonderful and are amongst the kindest and most empathetic people, I have ever met.

They went to fabulous lengths to try and gain more information for our family; (as some of Penelope’s conditions were very rare) which included putting us in touch with Boston’s Children’s Hospital in America. Unique were always at the end of the phone and had the time to listen and respond to an endless stream of questions.

When Penelope very, very sadly died, Unique were still there to offer support and genuine kindness to my daughter and the rest of the family.

I can’t praise or thank Unique Rare Chromosome Disorder Support Group enough!!’’

A very worthy and great choice for our charity this month and if you’d like to donate, we have collection boxes in every nursery.

We are all throwing on our Christmas Jumpers and we’d love you to join us too!

Full details of the charity can be found here.

Puffins’ Summer Fete and Graduation!

We have a summer fete every year to raise money for a carefully selected charity. This year we chose Bounce, a children’s mental health charity based in Devon. Bounce aims “to improve mental health and build resilience in children, their families and their wider school community, improving learning outcomes and creating happier learners.”

Last year we weren’t able to run the Fete during the coronavirus pandemic, so we wanted to have a fun and special day for all the parents and children that have been with us through lockdown and those who are also new to us.

At the Summer Fete we also hold the graduation for our pre-school children who are leaving us to start primary school. This is an exciting time for the children as they are moving on to the next stage in their journeys. The children get a certificate from their time with us, the keyworkers who have been working with them throughout their years talk about each of them, and they are also given a Puffin toy to remember their time with us.

We also have lots of little stalls at the summer fete to help us raise money. We had stalls such as adult and children’s tombola’s, raffles, face painting, hook a duck, guess how many sweets are in the jar, as well as many other things. It’s a day of fun and is also a chance for any new parents to come and have a look around the nursery.

We are so grateful and happy that we were able to donated a huge £1,250.00 to Bounce who are also over the moon with the donation!

Thank you to everyone who came and supported the nurseries, we appreciate you all!

Puffins Summer Fete 2021!

Come along and join us for a morning of fun and celebration on Saturday the 24th of July 2021 from 10am-1pm, everyone is welcome!

Our pre-school graduation ceremony will also be held at the Fete. There will also be a raffle, face painting, games, a food and drink stall and much, much more!

This year, the money raised at our Summer Fete will be donated to Bounce! – a local charity that helps to improve mental health and build resilience in children, their families and their wider school community. Bounce! have a range of therapies which can meet the individual needs of children in the Early Years.  I am sure you will agree that this is a very worthy resource in the current climate and hope you will join us in supporting Bounce!

We look forward to seeing you all there!
