Curriculum Approach

At Puffins, we believe that children are at their best when they are in control of their own learning, and able to explore their patterns of learning, known as Schemas, and to pursue lines of enquiry that engage and excite them, supported by Practitioners who enhance and scaffold their learning through a planned and purposeful environment.

We use ‘In The Moment Planning’, an internationally recognised approach to early learning. Practitioners skilfully observe children at play and provide resources and end activities to support and extend their learning, in the moment. This means that children’s interests are picked up on and used as a catalyst for learning when children are most engaged, seizing opportunities that maximise on their zone of proximal development and ensure that they are given the tools to create a firm and strong foundation for their next stage in learning.

Using the Statutory Framework for the Early Years Foundation Stage (the EYFS) that govern the practise of all who are registered to support and care for children from Birth to the end of their Reception Year, we undertake assessments of children’s learning and development each term to ensure that our programmes are supporting and extending children’s development, as well as to identify any areas for focus for the next term. These assessments, along with occasional written observations, are uploaded to our secure online Learning Journeys so that parents can also see their children’s development journey.

My daughter loves going to nursery. She quickly slotted in and has bonded well with staff. She enjoys the free flow of activities, and the level of independence encouraged, such as going to the loo alone.
