Curriculum Approach

At Puffins, we believe that children are at their best when they are in control of their own learning, and able to explore their patterns of learning, known as Schemas, and to pursue lines of enquiry that engage and excite them, supported by Practitioners who enhance and scaffold their learning through a planned and purposeful environment.

We use ‘In The Moment Planning’, an internationally recognised approach to early learning. Practitioners skilfully observe children at play and provide resources and end activities to support and extend their learning, in the moment. This means that children’s interests are picked up on and used as a catalyst for learning when children are most engaged, seizing opportunities that maximise on their zone of proximal development and ensure that they are given the tools to create a firm and strong foundation for their next stage in learning.

Using the Statutory Framework for the Early Years Foundation Stage (the EYFS) that govern the practise of all who are registered to support and care for children from Birth to the end of their Reception Year, we undertake assessments of children’s learning and development each term to ensure that our programmes are supporting and extending children’s development, as well as to identify any areas for focus for the next term. These assessments, along with occasional written observations, are uploaded to our secure online Learning Journeys so that parents can also see their children’s development journey.

More information about the experiences we offer can be found on the Parent Information pages.

Our daughter loves attending Puffins at Mont Le Grand. The staff are all friendly and engage well with her. Since starting (about six months ago) she has developed speech and social skills she would not have been able to at home.

We can't recommend them highly enough. All of the staff we have dealt with have been great, and it feels like they enjoy working there. Our son always comes home with a big smile on his face, excited by the day he has had.
Father at Sowton – December 2020
I would 100% recommend, as the manager and staff are just brilliant and really made my little girl comfortable, and relaxed and she's always coming out excited to tell me about her day what she's done and where she's been etc.

We have nothing but a positive experience with Puffins. Our daughter enjoys attending preschool, has made lots of friends and feels very comfortable with the preschool key workers. I feel her language and overall ability has developed really well as a result of attending. She has also learnt British sign language, in which she is really engaged, as she has taught my husband and I a few things! A great little nursery with a positive atmosphere and lovely, friendly staff.
Preschool Parent
My daughter loves going to nursery. She quickly slotted in and has bonded well with staff. She enjoys the free flow of activities, and the level of independence encouraged, such as going to the loo alone. Best of all, given the small inside space, is the fabulous garden, which the children are out in almost every day. I also like the focus on messy play and textually innovative ways of learning. The manager runs a well organised and innovative nursery, and I am happy to recommend highly.

Puffins is excellent for our little girl especially with her extra needs. The staff are always helpful and keen to provide additional support when needed. Communication is always clear and open. They have great staff, manner and resources for all the children. Thank you Puffins!
