“A fun, natural, curious environment that strives for outstanding care”

Puffins at Sowton is conveniently situated just off of J29 of the M5, next to the Honiton Park & Ride on Sowton Industrial Estate. We are a light and airy open plan setting, where children can explore a large garden as well as local the community parks and spaces.  The team are dedicated to ensuring that your child is welcomed and settled into our lovely nursery, and we work closely with parents to meet your and your child’s care routines and needs.

Our nursery benefits from a large open plan space, with separate areas for the babies. The toddlers, 2-3’s (our Bumblebees) and the Preschool have the opportunity throughout the day to interact with each other and have separate key times to support their individual development. The open plan nature of the setting means that children can easily develop links and bonds with older children and other staff, making their transitions through the age groups easier, as well as allowing siblings to be able to see and visit each other whenever they want to. Sowton also has an Ofsted rating of outstanding in all areas across the report.

The children are at the centre of our work and we love supporting them in their learning and development through our play based curriculum,  and our key worker system ensure that every child’s needs are met and that exciting, purposeful experiences are provided throughout their nursery week.

Children have free flow access to outdoors. The children become confident in getting prepared for the outdoors and are able to choose the environment in which they wish to explore and learn in. We offer a range of opportunities including Forest School Programmes to older children. The garden has different areas for the children to explore and allows us to provide separate spaces for our youngest children. We also take the children on regular trips out to the surrounding communities and parks.

At meal times we encourage the children to take part in their own self-care by serving themselves at lunch and snack time, developing skills in using cutlery and pouring their own drinks. These skills are vital, as they not only help children take responsibility for themselves, but develops skills such as hand-eye coordination, core strength and muscle control of the hands, arms and mouth. These skills are all key for early communication and pre-writing skills!

Excellent nursery! My daughter has just left to go to school, but she attended for almost 4-years. The staff are exemplary, full of creative ideas and very approachable to both children and parents. The children are always doing exciting and interesting things, experimenting and learning lots through creative play. My daughter spent a lot of time outside, learning about nature and playing in the mud kitchen! She always came home happy, full of stories of all the fun she'd had. We'll miss it now she's at school!
Mother at Sowton – September 2020
We can't recommend them highly enough. All of the staff we have dealt with have been great, and it feels like they enjoy working there. Our son always comes home with a big smile on his face, excited by the day he has had.
Father at Sowton – December 2020
My daughter has been attending Puffins for almost three years, and she absolutely loves it. The staff are amazing, and she has such special relationships with them. She has really thrived at the nursery, and they always have a variety of different activities inside and outdoors as well as trips out,
and she especially loves the cooking activities. She always comes home happy and excited to tell us about her day, and she's made some lovely friends. I would thoroughly recommend Puffins; the setting and the staff are brilliant.
